SG PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Training of SG leaders
By Krizzette Mendoza
Even before the old position of the school year 2009-2010 is over, I can say that I did my very best as President of the Student Government. However, I feel that I could have done better if I’ve been properly prepared for the job.
What do I mean with “properly prepared” for the job? I am realizing now that the SG is not just what I thought it was. It was not just campaigning for the SG presidency and getting elected. It involves knowledge on what the SG is and how it operates.
I was vice governor when I was a freshman. During my sophomore year, I ran for senator but lost. I became a barangay captain. I think I did better in the humble position. But each year level is operated as a province in the national government. It has a governor, mayors, and barangay captains. The functions of the body of the student government, even of the bureaucrats, are in the manual. But our leaders might have not read the manual so they lack understanding of their duties and responsibilities. Or maybe some officials did not understand what the SG primer says. Or, further, they want a position without being responsible for the needs of the office.
I came to realize (maybe only now, but I think it’s not too late…) that if the SG could function properly, the President could have a working knowledge of its organizations of its (3) branches: legislative, executive and judicial, we could have a better SG. The president should know all the roads linking the three (3) branches and their subsidiaries, the different school offices and the leagues organized to hasten action on SG projects. Now I know. The SG President cannot be the head of the SG without help from other student leaders down to the barangay heads.
And there is another heavy anchor to consider: The President has to maintain high academic performance.
Yes, I admit. As an SG President, I have not been properly prepared. And starting SY 2010-1011, the Academy leaders should prepare the SG president for SY 2013-2014.
Please.
Thank You and Mabuhay!
